Parks Made for Winter Rec

November 2025

Winter in our parks system looks a little different, but we don’t want you to be discouraged. Even though the temperatures drop, our lakes stay warm, our trails come alive and our coastal sun keeps shining. If you’re not sure what to do outside when there’s a chill instead of a heat wave, we’ll provide you with a few options to enjoy at LCRA Parks.

The colder months are the best times of year to cast a line at Lake Bastrop. As a designated power plant cooling lake, its warm waters attract hungry Largemouth bass, making it a favorite spot for anglers looking for big bites. It’s also a refreshing place for a dip — yes, swimming in December is absolutely a thing here! While you’re at Lake Bastrop, make a stay of it at either Lake Bastrop North Shore Park or Lake Bastrop South Shore Park. Wake up lakeside from your rig or use one of ours, sip your warm coffee in the crisp morning air and jump straight into your next activity.

If off-the-water adventure is calling your name, then try Turkey Bend Recreation Area — home to our newest hike and bike trails. Winding through the rolling Hill Country terrain, the 15-mile trail system is a great way to bundle up (if needed) and get some exercise in the cooler weather. Also residing on Lake Travis is Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area, where we’re keeping the fun rolling! Test-drive the outdoors in a whole new way with our electric mountain bike rentals or UTV tours, perfect for riders who want extra power and a fresh perspective on our trails.

For all of you snowbirds, Matagorda Bay Nature Park is the perfect place for winter warmth. With sunshine nearly year-round, it’s the ideal coastal destination for winter Texans looking to swap frosty mornings for breezy gulf air. Ask about our winter rates for lengthier stays! Spend your days beachcombing, watching coastal wildlife or joining one of our educational programs or diving into fun seasonal activities the whole family will love. Whether you’re strolling the shoreline or catching a sunset over the bay, this park offers plenty of things to do outside.

No matter which park you choose, winter is a season for cozy moments and trying new things. Don’t’ let the frigid temps keep you from exploring the best that Texas has to offer – just be sure to leave the rechargeable fan at home this time.
