The Great American Road Trip

May 2026

These days, everyone is always in a hurry. People want to get from Point A to Point B the quickest way possible but forget about the journey – a good old fashion road trip. Well, not anymore. More than 70% of Americans plan to drive on their next vacation. As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, travelers are expected to take to the road and explore the highways and sights that make our home special; this year will also be the Route 66 Centennial celebration – another reason to rediscover the journey. So as you’re driving across the country this summer, we’ve got a few park pitstops for you to check out while in Texas.

If your travels bring you near the Highland Lakes, make a stop at Black Rock Park. Here, you can bring your own RV or stay in a waterfront cabin for a few nights. Spend your days out on Lake Buchanan, grilling by your campsite or challenging the family to a round of mini golf. Kids can enjoy the playground and sand volleyball while others relax by the shoreline. In the summertime, it’s a popular place to gather for July 4th celebrations because of the nearby firework display across the lake.

Driving through the state will more than likely have you in the Central Texas area, which is a good spot to visit Lake Bastrop South Shore Park. Known for its year-round fishing, this park is a favorite for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Rent a watercraft to see beautiful Lake Bastrop or hike through the wooded trails that wrap around the lake. RV campers come for the full hookups sites, but even van and overland campers can appreciate the seclusion of each site with amenities to enjoy.

And if your road trip leads you all the way to the Texas coast, Matagorda Bay Nature Park is the pitstop where you’ve reached the end of the line. Where the Colorado River meets the Gulf, this destination offers ample birding, quiet beaches and excellent fishing. Go beachcombing for large seashells, paddle the park’s protected wetlands or participate in a guided educational program by our experienced staff. This park is a RV retreat with over 50 campsites, including waterfront and pull-through, but can also serve as a great glamping spot for basic road trippers with beach houses and Airstream rentals.

No matter where the road takes you this year, LCRA Parks invites you to slow down and celebrate the spirit of adventure. So, where will you go first?
